Position Purpose:
In a school setting, to provide the Missouri Model Program for students and specifically provide activities to meet the needs of their assigned caseload, consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students, and provide support to all middle school educational programs. The school guidance counselor assists students in having a positive and meaningful school experience. Continuous attention is given to assisting students to develop competence in decision-making, course selections, career planning, working with others, and taking responsibility for their own behavior.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counsels small groups and individual students with social & emotional concerns; refers severe problems to appropriate community resources
- Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students
- Refers students with severe problems to the appropriate school, district, and/or community resources in consultation with their parents
- Conducts counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers
- Responds to crisis situations appropriately when needed
- Acts as the school test coordinator for Standardized Achievement Tests and proctors assessments such as the ASPIRE, MAP, etc
- Partners with Special School District, building administrators and teachers as a part of the special education team by doing any necessary IQ testing and by attending IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload
- Supports the district’s overall educational program through general consultation activities and committee work
- Assists with the placement of students in appropriate educational, college prep, and career programs
- Facilitates informational evening sessions for parents including Open House, high school transition nights, See Our Schools, etc
- Other duties as assigned by the building principal
Qualifications:
- State of Missouri school counseling certification
- Teaching experience preferred and school counseling experience preferred
- Experience with trauma-informed schools, restorative practices, and social-emotional supports
- Demonstrated success in mediation & relationship building
- Qualified to administer individual IQ tests
- Knowledge of Missouri’s Model Guidance Program
