Description

The Adult Education & Literacy Orientation Teacher mitigates primary language barriers for students assimilating English as a secondary language.

 

Successful candidates will, at minimum, have:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • MO ESL certification
  • AEL certification preferred
  • Previous work experience with urban students and adults
  • Previous experience with electronic and manual record keeping

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Assists with identifying AEL students who meet eligibility standards for ESL services.
  2. Recommends entry and exit of students from the ESL program based on criteria established by District and AEL officials
  3. Monitors the achievement of former ESL students to ensure success in general education environments
  4. Prepares ESL student data reports for AEL faculty and staff
  5. Interacts positively with AEL staff, students, parents, and community members
  6. Conducts ESL professional development and training sessions for general education faculty
  7. Plans, prepares and delivers lessons for students based on available research of ESL best practices
  8. Maintains open communication with ESL parent/guardians
  9. Reviews and revises the ESL curriculum according to state and District standards
  10. Selects and provides resources and materials proven to assist ESL students enhance English proficiency, e.g., hardware, software, texts, virtual/distance learning, etc.
  11. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Knowledge of federal and state mandated English proficiency examinations
  • Ability to diffuse the level of frustration experienced by ESL students
  • Knowledge and experience with computer applications
  • Ability to establish partnerships with community and civic organizations who can serve as a resource for the District’s ESL program

  • Sufficient vision to read printed material, see distant objects with clarity, and identify and distinguish objects
  • Sufficient hearing to hear conversations in person and on the telephone, and hear sounds clearly up to 20 feet
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation and on the telephone, and in addressing groups
  • Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • This position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, running and reaching for extended periods of time
  • Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment, and move about the work area
  • This position will subject the employee to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, high noise levels, and various work related hazards
